Are you headed to a concert this summer? Unsure what to wear? Read on for summer concert outfit ideas for moms that hit all the right notes!

It’s summer, so that means it’s concert season in most of the country. Many of your favorite bands are touring through amphitheaters, stadiums, and other outdoor venues, and you want to go see and hear them play. I don’t blame you, I love live music too!

I’ve gone on a real roller coaster when it comes to concerts over the last decade or so. When my husband and I were first married, we loved to go to concerts as much as we could. Big names, small local groups, you name it, we liked it. Then, when the kids were very little, we thought our concert-going days were over. We just couldn’t make it work. But now that the kids are a little older (they are at least both potty trained), it’s a little easier to ask Nonna to come over, feed the kids dinner, put them to bed, and snuggle the dog for a few hours while we enjoy some live music.

My biggest problem with re-entering the summer concert scene in middle age is that I had no idea what to wear. I mean, I need to wear a bra, so anything people wear to Coachella is automatically out. But I also didn’t want to just wear my typical mom wear. I needed a summer concert outfit – but what?

What I landed on were several summer concert outfit ideas for moms that make me look cute and confident, but also cool and comfortable. These summer concert outfit recipes just plain work. If you’re attending a summer concert and you need an outfit, start here!

Summer Concert Outfit Ideas for Moms

               Dress

               Jumpsuit/Romper

               Shorts

               Skirt

               Shoes

               Rain gear

Dress

If it’s an easy summer concert outfit you’re after, you can’t go wrong with a dress. But not just any dress.

Flowy

Whether you go with a short or long dress, it needs to be flowy. Summer concerts are often very warm, so you don’t want a dress that’s actually touching your body. The breeze, any breeze, is your friend.

Natural fabric

I’m a fan of clothing made from natural fabrics in general, but that’s especially true when I’m thinking about wearing a dress to a summer concert. I mean, have you ever worn a polyester dress in a sweaty environment in which you’re trying to have fun? It’s a real buzzkill. That’s why i highly recommend that you stick to dresses made from materials like linen or gauze. You know I’m always a fan of gauze clothing!

Shorts underneath

Summer concerts often mean lawn seating, which can often mean sitting on the ground. I don’t know about you, but I am not exactly the Princess of Wales when I sit on the ground. I’m sitting crisscross-applesauce. I also don’t want to take my mind off the fun of the concert and devote brain space to how my dress is laying. The solution to this is to wear bike shorts under any dress you wear. It’s really that easy.

Something special

If you’re leaning toward a dress as a summer concert outfit, pick a dress that has something special about it. Pick one that has a fun pattern or detail that just kicks it up a notch.

Jumpsuit/Romper

If you like the idea of a one-piece summer concert outfit but would rather wear pants, a jumpsuit or romper is for you!

Flowy

Tight clothing is the enemy of a successful summer concert outfit for moms. Jumpsuits and rompers are often flowy, so they make great choices.

Natural fabric

Just as with a dress, a natural fabric jumpsuit or romper is key. It has to be breathable to be workable!

Shorts

My everyday summer outfits are often built around shorts, and I’m here to tell you that shorts can be a great base for a fantastic summer concert outfit.

Length

Sure, you may have worn booty shorts to concerts in your past life, but you need some shorts now that have a little length to them. If you don’t let your butt cheeks hang out in your daily life, you won’t feel comfortable with them hanging out at a summer concert. I’m not prescribing a specific length for shorts to wear to a summer concert, just pick a pair of shorts that you feel comfortable wearing. I like a 5” inseam, that’s my sweet spot.

Fun top

To kick up your shorts to something special enough to wear to a summer concert, pair it with a fun top. Again, I’m really going to suggest that you pick a flowy shirt made of natural fabric. You know I love gauze, but another cotton fabric or linen or Tencel works just as well.  I also suggest that you choose a sleeveless or short sleeve option – long sleeves aren’t a great choice for a summer concert outfit.

Skirt

If you’re more of a skirt or skort fan, these are great choices for a summer concert outfit too! My recommendations for a skirt or skort are similar to my recommendations for a shorts outfit. Make sure you have adequate length to your skirt, and pair it with a fun top to make it a little extra special for your fun night out.

Shoes

Most summer concerts are held in outdoor venues to take advantage of the warm weather. Although we all like to spend time outside when we can, you really need to think about your footwear. This is especially true for concerts with lawn seating. Mud is a thing.

So, what shoes should you choose? Shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and/or muddy. For me, this means sneakers. If you don’t want to completely ruin your outfit, you can pick a cute pair of white sneakers. Just be prepared to do some cleaning the day after the concert.

Rain gear

You also need to think about the weather if you’re attending an outdoor concert. If the weather is even slightly iffy, your summer concert outfit needs to include rain gear.

My go-to rain gear for any outing includes my wonderful Columbia rain jacket and a baseball cap. It’s not the cutest look, but these items will keep you from being soaking wet and miserable. If you’d rather let your summer concert outfit shine through the rain gear, a clear plastic poncho that you can pick up at the Dollar Tree might be the right choice for you.
