Are you in the market for some new shoes as the season changes but have no idea where to start? Read on for a place to start making sure you have the best Fall shoes for moms.
Why are shoes so hard? I never know what shoes to wear when I can’t just wear sandals. I’m going to blame growing up in Florida, where I could wear sandals pretty much every day of the year, but I could just be fashion challenged. But now that I live in a place that experiences all four seasons, I had to figure out the best Fall shoes for moms, or at least for this mom!
The struggle is real
I’ve spent years struggling with footwear all year round, but no time of the year has been more of a struggle than Fall. It’s chilly in the mornings and evenings but warms up most days. I mean, how is anyone supposed to know how to deal with that? If you struggle with what shoes to wear in the Fall, it’s not just you – this stuff is hard!
But this year, I think I’ve finally figured out Fall shoes! With just five pairs of shoes, you will have all the footwear essentials for any mom’s Fall wardrobe. These types of shoes are comfy (because we are moms), but they’re cute too! It’s not time for SAS yet, ladies!
As you read through my recommendations for Fall shoes for moms, keep in mind that the shoe categories are the important thing. Don’t feel like you need the exact shoes I’m recommending. You probably have most of these shoes in your closet already. I will link some great options that I wear and love if you have a hole in your Fall shoe wardrobe that you’re looking to fill. So, with that, here are all the best Fall shoes for moms!
Fall Shoes for Moms
Sneakers
Sneakers are an absolute staple for moms in every season. But I find myself wearing sneakers in the Fall more than in any other season. And I know I’m not alone. Sneakers are without a doubt one of the best Fall shoes for moms.
Now, it’s important to note that I’m not talking about athletic shoes here. These aren’t the shoes you’d work out in, for example. These are more like fashion sneakers. They are comfy and sporty, sure, but you’re not going to run a marathon in these.
What to look for
I’ve tried just about all the fashion sneakers out there, and I’ve found that a pair of sneakers with a low profile are the most versatile. These low profile, streamlined sneakers can be worn with shorts and dresses in the early Fall and with jeans, joggers, or any other pants you prefer as the weather cools down.
As far as color goes, I like to stick with something fairly neutral. I have a pair that’s just plain white and a pair that’s a mix of whites and tans. Both go with pretty much everything, which is what I like in a pair of sneakers. If you are more of a shoe girl than I am, why not try a pair that has a bit of a pop of color? That sounds like a great way to jazz up a basic Fall outfit!
Flats
Once you have your sneakers squared away, the item to tick off your list of Fall shoes for moms is a pair of flats. These are the shoes you want to have in your closet when you want to step it up a little bit, but you still want to be comfortable. Think date night, parent-teacher conferences, or brunch with your girlfriends. Flats are a great, versatile pair of shoes that you must have in your closet.
What to look for
If you’re only going to have one pair of flats in your shoe wardrobe, I highly recommend that you pick a pair in a neutral color. To me that’s a medium brown or black. Just pick whichever of these neutrals is going to match more of the clothes you wear on a regular basis.
Because flats are finally back in style, you can pretty much find flats in every shape and size. There are options with square toes, pointy toes, almond toes, round toes, and every toe in between. Although I think all of these could have their place in someone’s wardrobe, I like a pair of flats that has a slightly elongated toe box but that isn’t super pointy. This shape just tends to work best with my body shape and the pants I wear most often.
In terms of style, flats come in lots of those too. Ballet flats are classic, Mary Janes are having a moment, and the loafer will never truly go out of style. Whichever style you choose, I suggest you stick with classic versions that aren’t too trendy. You’ll get way more wear out of a classic loafer than one with a lug sole.
Booties
When the weather really starts cooling down in late Fall, you might want to swap your flats for something that provides a little extra warmth. But you probably don’t want a full boot yet. Enter booties – a definite must on the list of Fall shoes for moms!
Even though I stand by my inclusion of booties on the ultimate list of Fall shoes for moms, I must admit that they can be tricky. The heel heights are all over the place, the shaft heights can be great with some pants and terrible with others, and they can be downright uncomfortable. But when you find the right pair of booties for you it’s like heaven opens up and the angels sing. Just know going in that it’s a process. Be prepared to try on a lot of booties and make a lot of returns.
What to look for
After many, many tries, I finally found what makes a bootie work for me. I like a Chelsea-style bootie with a less intense lug sole and a medium shaft (for a bootie anyway). Pull-on booties are preferable for me, because I’m often running out the door and don’t have time for zippers. In terms of color, you can’t go wrong with black, but a cool-toned neutral also goes with basically everything in my wardrobe.
I have two bootie options in my current shoe collection. The first is a black pair from Target that includes a bit of a lift. The other is billed as a high-top sneaker, but it wears much more like a bootie. These are a few years old, but you can still find them on Amazon.
Boat shoes
I have had a life-long love affair with boat shoes. They’re never really on trend, but you can pry them out of my cold, dead hands. Why? Boat shoes go with everything and are probably the most versatile pair of shoes I own. When in doubt, I wear boat shoes.
Although I wear boat shoes all year round, they’re especially great in the Fall. They work well for rainy days and navigating slippery leaves. You don’t need to go anywhere near a boat to make good use of boat shoes.
What to look for
If you’re new to boat shoes, I highly recommend that you stick to a classic version for your first pair. And where boat shoes are concerned, it’s Sperry or nothing for me. This classic version is going to be the best addition to your collection of Fall shoes for moms.
Do you already have a pair of classic boat shoes in your closet or want something a bit more out of the box? Try a metallic version or a pair with a pop of color or pattern. But seriously, I’ve never met a Sperry boat shoe I didn’t like, so go with the pair you think will work best with your style.
