Do you have only one day in Legoland California? You can have a great day and do everything you want to do with minimal prep!
We recently returned from a great trip to San Diego. If you haven’t been here before, welcome! My name is Sara. I’m a 39-year-old mom who likes to share what I’ve learned from living my life with the internet. I traveled to San Diego with my husband (we won’t share his age), our 6.5-year-old son, and our 4-year-old daughter. We did a ton of fun activities while we were in San Diego, but both kids said their highlight was Legoland California. I also learned a ton from our one day in Legoland California, so I had to make a dedicated post.
In this dedicated post, I’m sharing the helpful tips I learned so you can successfully tackle one day in Legoland California. We had no tears, no meltdowns, and every member of the family had a great day. Honestly, that’s the best plug I can give for a day with your kids!
One Day in Legoland California
App
Before you start your one day in Legoland California, I highly recommend that you download the mobile app. I have a love/hate relationship with mobile apps that are destination specific. You usually need to have them, but they typically ain’t great. When we went to Disney World a few years ago, I absolutely detested the My Disney Experience app because it forced me to have my nose in the phone all day instead of being present to watch my son enjoy the magic. Even on our San Diego trip, I got extremely frustrated with the SeaWorld app because it was hard to use. Friends, I am happy to report that the Legoland California app is wonderful!
We primarily used the Legoland California app to check the wait times for the attractions my kids most wanted to ride. They were clearly presented in order of wait time duration so you could quickly determine whether a ride’s wait time was reasonable or not. If you found ride you wanted to ride next, you could simply click on it and it would give you walking directions from where you currently were standing. This feature helped us move quickly and efficiently through the park. Using it, we got to ride everything we wanted to ride in our one day at Legoland California. Don’t skip downloading the app!
Food
If you’re only spending one day at Legoland California, you don’t want to waste a ton of time trying to figure out food. Legoland California’s operating hours aren’t super long ( it was open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on the day of our visit in June), so you really only have to worry about lunch and snacks. Lucky for you, I have a recommendation for both!
Outside food
You can bring outside food into Legoland California, and that is a lifesaver! Legoland California allows you to bring in snacks, small meals, and bottled water, and that’s honestly all you need. I loved having snacks in my backpack to shove at my children when they were starting to wilt. It was the perfect way to keep everyone happy all day long.
I also packed a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for each member of the family, which was a great quick lunch. We didn’t have to waste time waiting in pretty long lines for chicken fingers, and we didn’t get weighed down by fried food. I highly recommend bringing a shelf-stable sandwich or protein bar or something for lunch. No negatives to this approach!
Apple fries
Even though I do recommend bringing in most of the food your family is going to eat during your one day at Legoland California, you can’t skip the famous apple fries! These things are unassuming. How good could apples cut into French fry shapes and dipped in whipped cream be? Let me tell you, they are delicious! So delicious, in fact, that my husband has been on my case to figure out how to make them at home since we returned from San Diego. Let these be your splurge for the day, just make sure you take your Dad or Mom tax before you hand them over to the kids. You won’t have another opportunity to have one because the kids will inhale them.
Attractions
Now, to the main event of Legoland California: the attractions! My favorite thing about Legoland California is that I didn’t have to say no to any ride my kids wanted to ride. They both met the height and age limits for every single ride in the park. This made the day go by so much better because no kid had a FOMO meltdown. Thank you, Legoland California!
Before I get into our strategy for tackling the attractions at Legoland California, it’s important to note that we focused on rides on our trip. But, there are plenty more attractions than just rides if your family isn’t into the rides or if your kids need a ride break. There are tons of opportunities to build with LEGO, you can meet your kids’ favorite characters, you can stroll through MINILAND USA, or play on one of the play structures throughout the park. Seriously, there is something for everyone!
Strategy
I was a little nervous about getting everything in that the kids wanted to do on our one day in Legoland California. We had made a list and it was long! I am happy to report that we were able to ride everything they wanted to ride following the strategy we chose, so I’m sharing it here in the hopes that you have the same success. Every day at a theme park is different, though, so your mileage may vary.
Start at Galacticoaster
If your kids are interested in riding roller coasters, I highly recommend that you start your day at Galacticoaster. It’s an indoor coaster that spins as you ride. Everyone in the family loved it (especially Mom).
We arrived at the park around 30 minutes prior to opening, which let us get in line to enter the ride areas of the park. Guests at the on-site hotels get a 30-minute head start, but I didn’t find that negatively impacted our day. As soon as the clock struck 10:00 am, we were let loose and headed straight there. I headed to the lockers (free for 2 hours) while my family hopped in line. We largely were able to keep walking until the ride had to pause temporarily to retrieve a loose item.
All-in, our ride on Galacticoaster took 40 minutes (it would have been 20 without the pause that happened when we were next in line to board). I never saw the wait time dip below about 50 minutes for the rest of the day, so going there first thing was definitely the right move.
Move clockwise, but stay flexible
After we rode the Galacticoaster, we largely followed a clockwise path around the rest of the park. This worked to our advantage because many of the rides to the right of the park entrance had very long lines in the morning that dropped considerably by the time we worked our way to them.
I say largely because we didn’t follow a straight-line path all the time. We would ride a ride and then check the app to see the wait times and choose our next ride. The park is small enough that it’s totally feasible to bounce around a bit, even with kids in tow! And there are always rides with wait times of essentially zero. These filler rides sometimes let us time some of the more popular attractions with minimal wait times. Minimizing our time in line was a key to having a successful day. No one likes to stand in line, especially young kids!
Highlights
Everyone will probably have a different idea of the best rides at Legoland California, but these were ours:
Galacticoaster (indoor coaster)
Technicoaster (drop coaster)
NINJAGO The Ride (3D motion-activated video game ride)
Souvenirs
Last, but not least, I want to say a few words about souvenirs. There are a ton of options at the gift shops. They have everything from mystery minifigures that cost $5 to giant LEGO sets that cost $500. Have an idea of your souvenir budget before you turn your kids loose so everyone is on the same page as to souvenir expectations.
I have two standout souvenirs that I want to highlight because I think they’d have mass appeal. First up are the character minifigure keychains. These things are awesome! Pretty much every character you could think of is available. My daughter is obsessed with Mirabel from Encanto, and she can be a little tricky to find. Not at Legoland! She was thrilled to find a Mirabel minifigure keychain! The other standout souvenir is a category of souvenirs. The main shop right at the park entrance has a whole wall of park-exclusive souvenirs. I love the idea of sticking to park-exclusive souvenirs because you can’t just order these online. They’re true souvenirs of your one day in Legoland California!
