If you’re anywhere close to my age, you know that we get to bust out our best Justin Timberlake impression tomorrow. It’s gonna be May! With a new month nearly upon us, here are my most memorable April things.
As always, I hope my April things list gives you some tips, product recommendations, and insight into my little life.
April Things 2025

Food
We are starting off with my favorite topic: food! I love to eat and I love to cook, so here are all the food highlights of my April.
Old Standby – Homemade pizza
Homemade pizza is a thing in my house every month, but it really stuck out as one of my April things. We made homemade pizza about once a week in April, and everyone loved it every time. Our April pizzas were regular old cheese, a pesto situation, a chicken/bacon/ranch pie, and pizza bagels (which totally count as homemade pizza). If you want to try your hand at homemade pizza, but you’re not sure where to start with toppings, I have a great list of topping options for you.
Favorite New Recipe – Italian Sloppy Joes
If you have kids, you know that when you find something they like to eat, you tend to make it a lot. Sloppy Joes are one of those foods in my house. In hopes of giving my kids something that warms their Sloppy Joe-loving hearts but also gives Mom a little bit of variety, I tried Skinnytaste’s Italian Sloppy Joes. This was a successful strategy, friends. Everyone loved these. My 5-year-old wanted them for dinner every night until they were gone. Give these a try!
Biggest Food Fail – Cauliflower mash
Like most moms, I try to get veggies into my kids however I can. Sometimes that means a little bit of vegetable trickery. I’ve tried a lot of ways to disguise vegetables. My most successful attempt has always been to add frozen spinach or kale to their morning smoothie, but I keep trying other ways to hide veggies in food my kids will eat. Some of these work, some of them don’t.
A recent attempt to pump my kids full of veggies without them knowing was to pass off cauliflower mash as mashed potatoes. It did not work. My kids ate the cauliflower mash, but both said they preferred “regular” mashed potatoes better. Oh well, at least I tried.
Dessert – Brown butter sugar cookies
I’ve mentioned before that we love brown butter sugar cookies in this house. They are a must make at the holidays, but they don’t have to be confined to the Christmas cookie tray. My husband had a hankering for some earlier this month, and he decided that he wanted to make it a dad project with the kids. With some help from Mom to brown rather than burn the butter and the best mixer speed, my little bakers made a batch all by themselves. I couldn’t decide whether to put this under food or experiences in my list of April things, but it counts as both!
Snack – Ranch Seasoned Cashews
A few months ago, a friend recommended the ranch seasoned cashews from Trader Joe’s as a snack. I went out and bought a bag right away and fell in love. Although I’ve been snacking on them for months now, they make my list of April things because they almost became an obsession this month. I barely snacked on anything else. If you like Ranch flavored snacks, get yourself to a Trader Joe’s and try these!

Books
My reading momentum picked back up a bit in April, so I have definite things to say about books this month. At least one very good read, one read I didn’t like, and one audiobook that you need to listen to ASAP.

Best Book of April – The Last Thing He Told Me
I’m not usually a mystery/thriller girl, but I read one occasionally to mix it up. I am so glad I picked by The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave. Hannah thinks she has met and married the love of her life, but then he disappears, leaving her with her 16-year-old stepdaughter and lots of questions. Together, they search for the truth of where he went and end up finding one another along the way.

Not My Favorite – The Paper Palace
One thing you need to know about me is that I really don’t like to read about abuse, especially sexual abuse. The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller contains sexual abuse and weird, unnecessary sexual encounters that aren’t abuse, so unfortunately this was a big no for me. I need something happy to read next.

Best Audiobook – The Happiest Man on Earth
The best audiobook I listened to in April needs to go on everyone’s must-listen list. The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku is such an important story of one man’s experience with the Holocaust and how it shaped his life after he shockingly survived. One line that has stuck with me is “I lived in a free country and that country became my prison.” Lesson: we should never take our freedom for granted.
TV/Movies
I watched a new series in April and I watched a movie. Who knew watching the TV would give me so many April things!
TV – Running Point
When I decide to watch a TV show, I like it to be light and quick. I don’t usually have time to watch an hour of TV at a time, so I really like 30-minute episodes. Lucky for me, Netflix added a new sitcom-length series called Running Point, starring Kate Hudson as the new head of the family business, which happens to be a professional basketball team. It was cute! I don’t feel super emotionally attached to it, but it was fun to watch.
Movie – Anyone but You
One night in April, my kids went to bed early and my husband was working, so I had a larger chunk of time to devote to the TV. I took that opportunity to watch Anyone but You on Netflix. The premise sounded cute. A boy and a girl with a brief past are forced together at a family wedding. It had potential. Unfortunately, it came off contrived to me. The highlight was Dermot Mulroney, who played the dad. Although that makes me feel old, so maybe that wasn’t the highlight.
Clothes
We are solidly into Spring here where I live, which means my Spring mom uniform is in full effect. All of those items count as April things, but I did pick three items in particular to highlight here in my monthly round-up.
Top – A new better than basic shirt
I love a better than basic shirt. I basically wear one every day. I feel like I can throw one of these tops on and go anywhere, within reason. I have lots of different better than basic shirts, but I found a new one that I love (and that’s under $10!), so I just had to share. This Time & Tru Cotton Mixed Fabric V Neck t-shirt is great. It’s 100% cotton, has gauze sleeves, a nicely placed v neck, and the blue color that I got is beautiful. Basically, it’s a great shirt, and my new favorite.
Shoes – Sandals
Springtime means that I finally got to get my toes out this month! I was born and bred in Florida, so keeping my toes shut up in shoes for so many months of the year is painful to me. That’s why I bring the sandals back out as soon as I can rule out the risk of frost bite. Lately, I’ve been reaching for my Birkenstock Arizona sandals, which I have in a goes-with-everything silver color. I wear them any day, any time, with any thing.
Swimsuit
As you may have seen, I was incredibly vulnerable and put photos of me in swimsuits on the internet to show you what an average mom looks like in the best one-piece swimsuits. That took some bravery on my part, but I hope it was helpful to you. Although I love all the swimsuits I showed you in that post, I feel the best in the Tommy Bahama Island Cays Colorblock Tie-Front swimsuit. It is so comfortable, so supportive, and so cute. I can’t wait for the pool to open at the end of May so I can wear it more often!

Products
What’s a list of April things without products that are saving my life? Not a very good list, that’s for sure. Here are just a few of my favorite products from this month.
Pizza stone
We made a whole lot of homemade pizza in April, so that meant the pizza stone got a lot of use. You might be skeptical of whether a pizza stone is worth it, but I can tell you that the crust is crispier when you use a stone than when you use a regular sheet pan. Using a pizza stone also lets you cook your pizza on the grill, which is our preferred cooking method for homemade pizza (although if you don’t have a grill or it’s raining, your oven works great too!). We got our pizza stone as a wedding gift, and it’s still going strong with frequent use. If you’re looking for a pizza stone, this is a good one!
Water bottle
My New Year’s resolution for 2025 is to drink more water, and I’ve been doing a decent job with my goal. With all my increased water consumption, though, I realized that I really wanted a new water bottle that was more travel-friendly than the Stanley knock-off I’ve been using for years. My wedding anniversary is in April, and when my husband asked if there was anything I wanted, I knew just what to suggest – an Owala FreeSip. I’m so pleased with it. It’s exactly what I was hoping it would be, and I love the fun 80s Ski Slopes color. I see lots more water in my future.
Couch caddy
My mother-in-law gets all the credit for this next April thing. We have opted not to have a coffee table in our family room to give the kids more floor space to play. But that means we don’t have anywhere to put the remotes or a drink. After a few years of this, my mother-in-law got fed up and gave my husband a couch caddy for his birthday. This thing is genius. It fits over the side of any couch, and provides just enough room for a drink, a remote, and maybe even a book. If you’ve foregone a coffee table because of your kids, you might get as much use out of a couch caddy as we have!

Experiences
I always love to share our very best experiences with you each month. So, if you’ll indulge me, here are the April things that money couldn’t buy.

3rd birthday
My daughter turned 3 this month! She loves all things purple, Minnie Mouse, and whatever her brother is doing.
I seriously don’t know where the time has gone. My youngest is now 3 years old, potty trained, and no longer sleeping in a crib. A whole phase of life, gone. Poof! Although I know these milestones and transitions can be sad for some moms, I’m nothing but excited. I can’t wait to see what else she can do, and I’m so honored that I get to accompany her on her journey.
Wedding anniversary
April is a big month for us, because it’s also the month we get to celebrate our wedding anniversary. This year marks 8 years in the books for my husband and me. I simultaneously can’t believe it’s been that long and that it’s only been that long. We’ve accomplished a lot in the last 8 years that we are proud of, and that’s definitely worth celebrating.
My mother-in-law was the hero again and watched the kids so we could go have a nice dinner out alone. It was so nice to celebrate the foundation of our family and focus on what started all the craziness we find ourselves in now.
Kid Stuff
As always, I’ve saved the April things that are kid-specific to the end. If you have young kids, I hope you’ll find these things as helpful as I do. If you don’t have young kids, I’ll see you next month for my May things. Same bat time, same bat channel.
Hi Ho Cherry-O
As I have mentioned, we are really into games around here lately. This month, we seemed to spend a whole lot of time playing Hi Ho Cherry-O. It’s quick enough to keep even my 3-year-old’s attention, but exciting enough to enthrall my 5-year-old. It’s a fun family game that’s worth a purchase if you don’t have it. I just would love to know why I always seem to land on a tipped basket, but the kids never do. Sorcery is afoot!
Kids’ curl cream
If you read my post about how I manage my toddler’s curly hair, you’ll know that I have found a handful of products that work really well to keep her crazy hair looking halfway decent. The hero product among these, though, is definitely the Giovanni Eco Chic Kids Styling Taming & Curl Cream that I apply to my daughter’s hair after a bath or shower. Once I incorporated this product into my routine, her hair became so much more manageable and easy to refresh. It doesn’t hurt that it smells good, too!
Purple flowered shirt
My daughter asked for a bed birthday for her 3rd birthday. When I asked her to elaborate, it became clear that she wanted all things purple flowers, just like her bedspread. I thought I hit the jackpot. Surely I would be able to find purple flowered things for a little girl in the Spring! Boy, was I wrong. I had a heck of a time finding a purple flowered shirt for her to wear on the big day. I finally had luck at Gap Factory Store with this cutie little purple flowered shirt. If you have a toddler who is into purple flowers, snatch this up while you can. Maybe even buy a few sizes.
