Having an Easter egg hunt soon? You need ideas for Easter egg fillers! I’ve got some good, junk-free options for you.

If you have young kids in your life and celebrate Easter, you probably have an Easter egg hunt or two in your future over the next few weeks. Whether you’re hiding eggs just for your own kids, the kids in your extended family, or the entire neighborhood, it’s important to think through your Easter egg fillers.

When I was a kid, and now that I have kids of my own, we have always hunted for the eggs we dyed on Easter morning. My husband’s aunt, on the other hand, likes to have the kids over for an egg hunt and uses filled Easter eggs. Recently, she has started mixing up the Easter egg fillers to include stuff other than candy. I thought the variety was a great idea and the kids loved it too!

If you use filled plastic eggs for your Easter egg hunt and you want to mix up your Easter egg fillers too, I’ve got a great list for you. These Easter egg fillers will be hits with the kids and they are not super junky items that will go directly into the trash the minute they come out of the eggs. Who could ask for more than that?

Food

Repeat after me: there is nothing wrong with edible Easter egg fillers. Just because most Easter Egg fillers are edible doesn’t mean you’re a bad person if you choose to fill your Easter eggs with food. I’m even going to go one step further and say that food, especially candy, makes a great Easter egg filler! If you want to explore edible Easter egg fillers, I’ve got some ideas for you.

Candy

There is a reason that candy is the classic Easter egg filler. It’s delicious and everyone loves it. Don’t feel like you have to deviate from the classic candy Easter eggs if you don’t want to.

Dried fruit

If you want to keep your Easter egg fillers edible, but you’d rather go the healthy route, dried fruit is a great choice. Individual raisin boxes fit in the larger plastic eggs or you could decant the dried fruit of your choice directly into the washed plastic eggs if raisins aren’t your jam or if you have a dog. Please exercise extreme caution with raisins if you have a dog!

Fruit snacks

If you want to go with something that feels like candy but is maybe a smidge healthier, fruit snacks seems like a good compromise. Kids absolutely love fruit snacks, so they will be delighted to find them in their Easter eggs. I really like the Nature’s Garden Yoggies if you are looking for a good option.

Stickers

Are stickers junk? Technically, yes. But they bring so much joy to kids that I tend to overlook their junkiness and give them anyway. I especially like the vinyl stickers that you can buy in big packs of like 100 single stickers. They tend to stick better and last longer on durable goods like water bottles. These individual stickers also fit very nicely in the plastic eggs – no squishing required.

Tattoos

Along sort of the same line as the stickers, temporary tattoos are another great Easter egg filler that the kids will love. My kids, ages 3 and 6, both love temporary tattoos of any kind. They line their arms with them whenever they get them. It almost doesn’t matter what is on the tattoos, they’re down for them. If you expect that your kids might not use them all in one day, I would suggest getting tattoos that aren’t Easter themed. But who are we kidding? They’re going to put every single tattoo on their body immediately. Get the Easter ones.

Band-Aids

Fun Band-Aids are treats in my house. They became treats after my husband found my daughter and my niece, both 3 at the time, absolutely covered in fun Band-Aids. Three mostly full boxes of fun Band-Aids gone. Now, I buy the flesh-colored ones and the kids have to make do. This seems to discourage them from running through massive quantities of Band-Aids for absolutely no reason at all. Because Band-Aids are now boring in my house, I know my kids would love to find fun Band-Aids in the Easter eggs, so yours probably would too. They make Band-Aids in all sorts of shapes with all sorts of characters on them nowadays, so you’re sure to find something that works for the kids in your life.

Hair accessories

If you have girls attending your Easter egg hunt, all sorts of hair accessories make really fun Easter egg fillers. Here are some of our favorite hair accessories that would work great inside a plastic egg.

Hair ties

My daughter is in her pony era. She wakes up every morning and asks for a pony in her hair. I’m a pony girl myself, so I’m happy to oblige. We have tried a few different types of hair ties, but these colorful ones that you get in a giant pack have been her favorites. They seem to stay pretty well all day, they don’t break, and the colors are fun! The girls would definitely be happy to find one or two of those in an egg!

Hair clips

I never thought I would see the day, but those small butterfly clips are most definitely back! My daughter loves them. They add just the perfect little pop of color to her rat’s nest of curls. We just need to be careful removing them because they easily get caught in said rat’s nest. Most of the sets I’ve found have two clips per color, so popping each color in an egg sounds like a great plan to me.

Nail polish

My daughter is super into nail polish these days. She prefers to paint every nail a different color. It’s a look. Because she’s only 3-years-old, we opt for the non-toxic, peel-off nail polish that lasts all of about 30 seconds. She’s totally not bothered by it coming off so quickly. That just means she can change the colors more often! If you have young girls at your egg hunt, these small peel-off nail polish pots are great Easter egg fillers. Even the boys could surprise you and be delighted by them!

Activity tokens

OK, now here’s where your Easter egg fillers could get interesting. You know what definitely fits in a plastic egg? A slip of paper or raffle ticket. How is a slip of paper or raffle ticket fun for the kids, you ask? It’s not the paper or ticket itself, it’s what you write on it!

My kids love special activities. They don’t really care if the special activity is an extra book at bedtime or a fun excursion to an arcade. It’s the extra of it all that makes these activities special to them, no matter how much time, effort, or money is involved. I like to take advantage of my kids’ love for these special activities and weave them into our lives where I can. They make perfect reward coupons to show my appreciation for their good behavior and gifts on holidays.

I love the idea of stuffing a few activity tokens in plastic Easter eggs as special prizes. Don’t fill all of your eggs with activity tokens, but a few sprinkled in here and there sure would go a long way. Some fun activities that would be well received are:

               Late bedtime

               Extra book

               Movie night

               Ice cream

               Dinner out

Wild card (the kid gets to pick – within reason, of course!)

Money

Who doesn’t want money? I mean, this is a no-brainer when it comes to Easter egg fillers. And don’t be afraid you’re going to bankrupt yourself by stuffing Easter egg with money. My kids like coins way more than they like bills anyway, so clean out the change compartment in your car and get to stuffing! It might be fun to have a few eggs that have $1 bills in them, just to make a few extra special, but please do not think you have to be Daddy Warbucks to stuff your Easter eggs with money.
