I can’t believe it’s already the end of May. How did this happen? Setting aside my disbelief, here are all of my May things worthy of sharing.
As always, I hope my list of May things gives you some tips, product recommendations, inspiration, and insight into life in my little corner of the universe.
May Things 2025

Food & beverage
Starting with food because food tops the list of the May things I thought about. What else is new?
Old Standby – Meatloaf
Meatloaf gets a bad rap and I’ve never understood why. Meatloaf is delicious, inexpensive, easy to make, and kid-friendly. It has all the makings of a great family dinner. And it sure got some love in our house this month. Served with mashed potatoes and the veggie of your choice, it’s a balanced meal that usually gets eaten. If you need a tasty, no-nonsense meatloaf recipe, I’m happy to share!
What you need
1 lb ground meat of your choice (we usually use turkey)
1 egg
1/3 Cup seasoned breadcrumbs
2 cloves of garlic, minced
A few squirts of ketchup
A few squirts of yellow mustard
A few shakes of Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper, to taste
How to make it
Toss all of the ingredients above into a bowl. Get in there with your God-given utensils, your hands, and mix well. Mold the mixture into a log shape on a baking sheet or just throw it into a loaf pan. Bake at 375°F or until cooked through.
Favorite New Recipe – Pimento Cheese Quiche
At the beginning of the month, I was looking for a festive dinner to make for the Kentucky Derby. We didn’t have any special plans to watch the Derby, I just love an excuse to have a dinner theme, so I looked for something that felt like the Kentucky Derby but that I was confident my kids would eat. I found exactly that in How Sweet Eats’ pimento cheese quiche. Y’all, this was so good. My kids inhaled it, and my husband and I thought it was delicious too. My son did suggest that I add bacon the next time I make it. And there will be a next time.
Biggest Food Fail – Eating at Dinnertime
It’s baseball season and that means there are games and practices right at dinnertime several nights a week. And although I do have a whole list of great on-the-go dinners that come in clutch, it’s still tough to make sure everyone is eating a good dinner in this season of life. I know that this too shall pass, but not eating dinner at dinnertime or at a dinner table has been our biggest food fail this month.
Dessert – Flag Cake
I already mentioned that I love an excuse to have themed food, so you’d better believe I went all-in for Memorial Day. I love to make a flag cake for the patriotic summer holidays. It’s an easy, festive, delicious dessert that everyone loves. If a flag cake didn’t make your list of May things, make sure you add it to your Fourth of July plans this summer!

Drink – Flavored Sparkling Water
Ladies, it’s sparkling water season! I don’t know why I don’t drink sparkling water in any other season of the year, but I absolutely love it from May to September. I’m pretty open to trying most flavors, but my favorite flavored sparkling water is Trader Joe’s Cranberry Clemetine Sparkling Water. If you ask my son (who fancies himself a connoisseur), he’d say that the Trader Joe’s Watermelon Lemonade Sparkling Water is the clear winner.

Books
I’m embarrassed to admit that books didn’t rank high in my May things. Life was busy this month, so I didn’t get to read much. I’m hoping for much more to report in the book realm next month.
Not My Favorite – The Night Watchman
I was so excited to read Louise Erdrich’s The Night Watchman. It got a Pullitzer Prize for goodness’ sake And I really wanted to like this book. I did! But unfortunately, I just couldn’t get into it. She switches between points of view of various members of the Turtle Mountain Reservation as they face dispossession by the U.S. government and I struggled to keep up. I think this was a me problem not a book problem, though. I’m clearly out of practice reading more literary fiction. Because it took so long for me to get through this book, it was the only book I read in May, so I don’t have a best book of the month this month.

Best Audiobook – The Day the World Came to Town
We all remember our personal experience with September 11, 2001. And we have heard the experiences of many who were in the World Trade Center or the Pentagon on that day. But what about the people who were in airplanes en route to the U.S. when the airspace was closed that day? That’s where The Day the World Came to Town by Jim DeFede comes in, as it focuses on the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, Canada, which took in many of those stranded passengers. This was a great listen. A heartwarming 9/11 story that just made you feel good about people. It was uplifting at a time when I need uplifting. If you’re looking for an uplifting story to give you a little faith in humanity, this book is for you.

TV
I didn’t have much time for TV or movies in May either. Sorry my list of May things isn’t action packed in the media categories.
The Residence
The one TV show that I did manage to watch in May was The Residence on Netflix. And it was a good one! I don’t know about you, but I’ve become a little bored with the soap opera-y shows that are marketed to my demographic, so a murder mystery in the White House being solved by a quirky female Hercule Poirot was a refreshing change. I really hope that Netflix does more with Cordelia Cupp!
Clothing
No one is more surprised than I am that I’ve started caring about fashion and clothes. I’m still no fashionista, but I’m having fun with clothes for the first time in my life. There will be more clothing-related content coming up, but for now here are the clothing-related May things I have to share.
Gauze
I am officially obsessed with gauze clothing. I want to burn my whole wardrobe and just replace everything with gauze. It’s breathable, comfortable, and soft and it looks put together without needing to be ironed or steamed. I’m going to share all my favorite gauze items soon, but for now, I’ll share a shirt I can’t stop wearing, the short sleeve gauze button-front shirt from Old Navy. It’s amazing.

Ball cap
As I mentioned above, we are fully in baseball season over here at my house. Baseball impacts our dinner schedule, our weekend plans, and our wardrobes. Because I’ve been at the ball field all month, I’ve had a baseball cap on my head more than not. It provides shade to my face and gets my hair out of my way, so I don’t head to the baseball field without one. My go-to baseball cap is, of course, a University of Miami hat. Always repping the U!
Undershirts
As the weather warms up, I rely more and more on my ubiquitous undershirts. The necklines creep lower and the armholes get bigger in the summer, so I look to my undershirts to provide the coverage I want. It doesn’t hurt that they also lock and load the bits that seem to move more as each year passes. I’ve tried a bunch of different undershirts from all the brands, and my favorite undershirt has been the shelf bra camisole from Gap Factory for years and years. They do the job well and the price is right.
Products
What’s a list of May things without products that are saving my life in this season? Here are just a few of my favorite products from this month that I highly recommend if you’re in the market.
Mom bag
For Mother’s Day this year, I asked my husband and kids for a new mom bag. If you read my post about transitioning out of a diaper bag, you’ll know that we have ditched the diapers in my family so I needed an upgrade. I did a whole bunch of research and finally landed on the Small Banbury Backpack from Vera Bradley. Now that I’ve used it for a few weeks, I can confirm that it’s the perfect mom bag. It fits just enough, it’s comfortable to wear, and it easily wipes free of dirt, mustard, and boogers. It’s a winner.

Serum
My skin has been going through it lately. I don’t know if it’s because I added azaleic acid back into my evening routine, increased sunscreen use, or general allergies, but my skin has been revolting (and molting) all month. Seriously, I look like a snake shedding its skin. The only product that helps when my skin gets in this state is the Aveeno Calm + Restore Triple Oat Serum. It really clears up any skin issue I have after only a few uses. I highly recommend keeping a bottle of this stuff on hand, just in case!
Cuticle oil
It hasn’t just been my face that’s been going through it lately. My nails are a mess too. The nails themselves have been peeling and the cuticles have been red and angry. These symptoms point to a lack of hydration, so I’ve really been trying to rectify this problem by stepping up my hand lotion use and using a cuticle oil twice a day. I’ve been using Essie’s Apricot Nail & Cuticle Oil and it’s been working well.
Experiences
As always, my favorite May things were experiences, not things. This was a jam-packed month, so I could go on and on in this category, but I’ll keep it to my top three.
Baseball
Have I mentioned that my son is playing baseball this Spring? To be more precise, it’s actually tee-ball, but they’re having the coaches pitch to the kids who can handle it, so it’s a bit of a hybrid. And it’s hilarious. The kids don’t know which way to run around the bases, they tackle each other to get a ground ball, and they play in the dirt. Perhaps the funniest part of tee-ball for me, though, is watching my husband and brother-in-law try to coach and teach the kids how to play baseball when they’d rather play in the dirt. They’re going to need several drinks when the season is over.
New niece
My sister had her third child (and first girl!) at the beginning of the month. She is so cute. We don’t live close by, so I haven’t met her in person yet, but I can’t wait. After 10 years of being a mom to only boys, my sister is loving all the bows, and my niece sure looks cute in them!
Hershey trip
As the kids get older, I’m trying to be much more intentional about taking advantage of opportunities to get out of town. This month, my husband had the week before Memorial Day off from work, and when my son’s Kindergarten orientation was scheduled for the Thursday of that week, I knew it was a sign for me to plan a little getaway over the extra-long weekend we found that we had. We didn’t want to go too far, so we headed to Hershey, a place that none of us had ever been. I’m so glad we did this. Even though it was cooler than normal and a bit rainy, it was a blast!

Kid stuff
As always, I’ve saved the kid-specific May things to the end. If you have young kids like I do, keep reading!
Garage sports organizer
I almost hesitate to admit this, but we just got around to putting together the garage sports organizer that we got as our family Christmas gift this month when we did a huge garage overhaul. We made quite a few changes to how we have the garage set up, but the biggest game changer was for sure this sports organizer. This thing is a great way to corral all the sports equipment that lined the perimeter of the garage into a central location. The kids know that this is the place to find all things and put all the things away when they’re finished. Totally worth every penny I paid for it.
Kid-sized camp chair
Oh no, here I go again! We have been at the baseball field a lot in May. My husband and brother-in-law are coaching the team this year, and my sister-in-law is the manager, so that leaves me in charge of the 3-year-old girls. Besides snacks, the most impactful thing I bring to the ball field to keep the girls from driving me insane is a kid-sized camp chair. They love that they fit just right and they have a place to put their water bottles and aforementioned snacks. If you spend a lot of time at a baseball field or soccer field with a sibling in tow, you need one of these in your life.
Cheap sunglasses
My kids are obsessed with their sunglasses in the summer. They always want them in the car or when they’re playing outside. But just because they want them at the beginning of the car ride or their time outside doesn’t mean they keep them on their faces for long. They get lost, left places, snapped in half, and covered in filth that is impossible to clean off. That’s why I buy cheap sunglasses in bulk and stash them everywhere. We have sunglasses in both cars, in the garage, in the basement, and by the back door. If the kids want sunglasses, there is a pair within arm’s reach.
