Are you a mom who struggles with what to wear in the Spring? Struggle no more! I’ve developed the perfect Spring mom uniform for me, and I hope it works for you too!

Just when I was feeling confident about my fashion choices, the season changed! For the first time in forever this winter I felt good about getting dressed in the morning with the help of my Winter mom uniform. With the weather warming up, though, full-length denim and flannel aren’t exactly practical. A Spring mom uniform was in order. And fast.

You see, I liked that I finally felt good about getting dressed in the mornings and I didn’t want to lose that. So, I wanted to figure out my Spring mom uniform as early in the new season as possible so I could hit the ground running. I’m happy to say that I succeeded in my goal. I have my Spring mom uniform set and it’s not even a week into the new season. I’m also happy to say that I’m really happy with it, and I think it’s really easy for you to get some inspiration from it.

Things you should know

I live a very casual lifestyle. My Spring mom uniform can take me pretty much everywhere I do. In these outfits, I feel comfortable, put-together, and age-appropriate (I’m in my late 30s, for reference).

I have a 5-year-old son and an almost-3-year-old daughter, so I’m constantly on the move. I’m up and down from the floor, in and out from playing outside (no matter the weather). You get the picture. We are active over here.

I work from home. Business suits or other traditional work wear and not part of my typical wardrobe.

I do not wear leggings out of the house. I just don’t feel comfortable in them, whether my bum is covered or not. If you love leggings, you can feel free to swap them into your Spring mom uniform, but you won’t find them in mine.

I don’t like to spend a lot of money on my clothes. At this stage of life, I can’t ensure that they’re going to be treated well (chocolate-covered mouths tend to find my white shirts like moths to a flame), so I don’t invest in super high-quality pieces. I hope that changes as my kids get older and less feral.

Bottoms

Bottoms get a little tricky in the Spring because the weather can be all over the place this season. That’s why my Spring mom uniform has bottoms options, two to be precise.

Jeans

Although I mentioned above that the weather in the Spring is too warm for full-length denim, it’s perfect for cropped denim. On my 5’6” frame, that means I look for 27” inseam jeans for my Spring mom uniform. For me, this is the perfect crop that doesn’t age me like a capri pant (sorry, Mom) or make me look like I’m escaping the floods.

My favorite cropped jean style is the Kensie Mila jeans. I particularly like the lighter wash for the Spring. I bought mine at TJ Maxx (see note above about me being cheap), so take this as your invitation to go treasure hunting. If you can’t find the Kensie Mila jeans, try on anything that is 99-100% cotton and is labeled as a straight cropped jean.

Shorts

The beautiful thing about Spring is that you can start sprinkling in shorts on the warmer days. Some of you might not be excited about the prospect of wearing shorts, but as a Florida girl at heart, I love when I get to air out my legs a bit. The only downside is that I have to shave my legs regularly. Womp, womp, womp!

When I’m buying shorts I looked for a relaxed fit and a 5” inseam. I like to have a pair of blue denim shorts, a pair of white denim shorts, and a pair of khaki shorts. With these three in my closet, I can mix and match with basically any shirt I have. If you’re in the market for shorts for your Spring mom uniform, these denim shorts from Old Navy tick all my boxes.

Tops

Now that we have our bottoms set, what to wear on top? I am, at heart, a t-shirt gal. But at almost 40-years-old, I like to wear something a little bit more elevated than just a basic t-shirt. What makes a t-shirt a little bit elevated or “better than basic” as Merrick White says?

First, I love a camp shirt. A camp shirt is a casual, short-sleeved, button-front shirt. Camp shirts have a slightly more relaxed fit, but they still read a little more put-together than your plain old basic t-shirt. Lately, I’ve really been into camp shirts by the brand Beach Lunch Lounge lately. I have multiple colors of the Darby style and it has quickly become my favorite shirt. It’s a little pricier, but worth it, in my opinion.

If I don’t want to wear a button-front shirt, I tend to pick a t-shirt that has a bit of something special to it. What makes a t-shirt a little bit special? For me, it’s a bit of a puffy sleeve, an eyelet detail, a peplum, or maybe a ruffle trim. Just look for details that make you say ooh that’s pretty when you’re shopping for t-shirts. A few I’m loving for Spring are an eyelet sleeve t-shirt, a henley, and a striped number with a waist-emphasizing tie.

Layer

The hardest part of Spring to deal with is the temperature swings that can happen daily. It’s not uncommon to wake up at 35°F, warm up to 75°F, and go to bed at 45°F. That means you need a layer that can keep you warm in the morning and the evening, but something you can easily ditch when the sun is doing its job.

My favorite outer layers to wear as part of my Spring mom uniform are light jackets, specifically a denim jacket or a utility jacket. My denim jacket is approximately 15 years old, but the good news is that it’s a basic Levi’s denim jacket, so it’s still available! I always size up in a denim jacket (that’s just my preference). My utility jacket is also older than my children. I was unable to find the one that I have still being sold, but this style is very similar to what I own.

Belt

If you’re not a belt person, you can just skip this section and keep on reading. I get it. I was reluctant to add a belt to my wardrobe for quite a while. It just gave me too many school uniform vibes. But once I got over that buried trauma, I realized that I actually look a whole lot better when I wear a belt. You see, my body is a rectangle, so I need some help making it look like a body rather than a box. A belt helps tremendously!

As is the trend of my Spring mom uniform, I’ve had my everyday belt for an eon. The closest thing I have found to the one I have is this one from Gap Factory. Mine is also from Gap Factory, so I can vouch for the longevity of their belts.

Shoes

Just as was the case with my Winter mom uniform, my biggest hang-up in deciding on my Spring mom uniform was the shoes to wear. I just don’t understand how to make shoes go with the rest of an outfit. Because of this, I focus on comfort rather than style. If you’re looking for stylish shoe recommendations, I’m probably not your girl. If you want comfy shoes that do the job and don’t look ridiculous, you might be interested in my Spring mom uniform shoes.

White sneakers

I’m just as into white sneakers this Spring as I was over the Winter. The only bummer about white sneakers is that they get really gross really fast, so I might be in the market for a new pair soon to replace my current pair. I bought and returned the adidas Grand Court Cloudfoam sneakers in the Fall, for no other reason than I found a cheaper pair. But I’m hoping that if I spend a little more on a new pair they might last me a little longer. Long story short, I think they’re coming home with me soon.

Sandals

Because I grew up in Florida, where I wore sandals year round, I’m very quick to get them back out in the Spring. I’ve gone through phases of which style of sandals I like best over the years, but for the past few years, I’ve fully embraced the classic Birkenstocks. They may not be the most attractive sandals ever, but they are crazy comfortable and hold up very well.

Jewelry

It’s a new season, should I start wearing more jewelry? Probably, but I also won’t. Look, I like what I like. And that is a simple pair of silver hoops and a classic two-tone watch. I just wouldn’t be me without these simple accessories, so they have to be part of my Spring mom uniform.
