Happy Halloween! I can’t believe we’ve been through 10 months of 2025. That seems like sci-fi stuff. Regardless of how I personally feel about where we are in space and time, what I do know is that it’s time to share my October things with you.
As always, I hope my list of October things is helpful. Here’s hoping it gives you some inspiration, a helpful tip, and some insight into my little life.
October Things 2025
Food & beverage
You know I want to start off my October things with food and beverage. Food has continued to bring me joy this month, even when my kids refuse to eat it.
Old Standby – Pizza bagels
If you grew up in the 90s like I did, you had your fair share of Bagel Bites. I mean, everyone loves bagels and everyone loves pizza, so it naturally follows that everyone would love pizza bagels. These days, I tend to make my own pizza bagels with mini bagels from ALDI, pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella cheese, and turkey pepperoni rather than crack open a box of Bagel Bites from the freezer, but pizza bagels are delicious either way. I’ve also found that pizza bagels are great lunchbox fillers and satisfying food to eat on the go, so we get a lot of mileage out of pizza bagels in our house. “When pizza’s on a bagel, you can eat pizza any time!”
Favorite New Recipe – Taco casserole
My kids love tacos, but when I put all of the same taco ingredients in another vessel, they tend to freak out. So, my decision to make Half Baked Harvest’s Chicken Taco Casserole was a risky one. Luckily, this jazzed-up way to eat taco ingredients was a winner in my kids’ eyes. My son even thanked me for making it and asked me when we could have it again. Good thing it makes a whole 9 x 13 full – leftovers were plentiful!
Biggest Food Fail – Creamy chicken couscous soup
I love chicken noodle soup any way I can get it. Especially this time of year. Unfortunately, I’ve never gotten my kids to share my love for the stuff. That doesn’t mean I don’t keep trying. This month’s attempt was How Sweet Eats’ Creamy Chicken Couscous Soup. I loved it, but my kids ate it under duress. One day they’ll change their minds about chicken noodle soup!
Dessert – Apple pie
Last month it was all about apple crisp, but this month it was all about apple pie. We went apple picking in October, so I had an overabundance of apples. My husband insisted I make his favorite pie, a cinnamon apple crumble pie that I’ve been baking for him since the very early days of our relationship. It’s a recipe that I’ve tweaked over the years until it’s perfect. If you want me to share it, let me know in the comments!
Beverage – Winter Spice tea
It’s hot beverage time again! I’ve always loved hot beverages, even when I lived in Florida. As soon as it becomes comfortable to consume hot beverages, I’m all-in. I keep hot beverages on rotation during the Fall and Winter, but my favorite hot beverage is Twining’s Winter Spice tea. It’s apple-y, slightly spicy, and just perfection.
Books
I can’t seem to find the time to read much these days, so my October things only included a handful of books, both physical and audio. Luckily, I had some winners!
Best Book of October – A Winter in New York
I know it’s not winter, but I was in the mood to read a rom com and this one sounded cute. A Winter in New York by Josie Silver follows Iris, a chef who is running away from the trauma of her past life. She finds herself in possession of the secret family recipe of the gelateria down the street. Can she save the gelateria and herself with this knowledge? You know she can. I can’t wait for the Hallmark movie version.
Best Audiobook – In Gad We Trust
In Gad We Trust is Josh Gad’s memoir. It’s funny, it’s surprising, and it’s heartwarming, sometimes all in the same sentence. If you have a Frozen-obsessed kid, I beg you to listen to it. Josh narrates the audiobook himself, so it’s like Olaf telling you his life story.
Media
Media is definitely the weak link in my list of October things. It’s pretty much a sports on TV season. Everything else is getting shoved aside for now.
Hockey
The biggest bright spot to media in October is that hockey has returned. I grew up in Florida, where ice hockey was a completely foreign concept. When I started dating my now husband who was a hockey fan, though, it didn’t take much for me to get hooked. Now I get completely sucked into the hockey season and watch as many games as I can. Let’s Go Pens!
Clothing
A new season brings with it new clothing that gets put in the daily rotation. My clothing-related October things are definitely in the daily rotation. And they’re good. Really good.
Jeans
It should come as no surprise that I’m wearing jeans in October. So are most people in the Northern hemisphere. But I’ve found a really good pair of jeans, so I want to highlight them for you. The Banana Republic Factory Straight High-Rise Jean just might be magic. These jeans make my mom pooch completely disappear, and all for the extremely reasonable price of $54. Take my money, Banana Republic Factory!
Long-sleeved T-shirts
It’s also not exactly boundary pushing to be wearing long-sleeved t-shirts in October. I love a good long-sleeved t-shirt, but good ones are pretty hard to find. They’re often either too thin, too clingy, too boxy, or ribbed (shudder!). So when I find a good one, I want all the colors. The good one I found recently comes from Eddie Bauer of all places. Don’t sleep on the Favorite Long-Sleeve V-Neck T-shirt! It’s a closet staple you need in your life.
Undies
I really debated whether or not to share the new underwear that I’ve been wearing in my October things post. I mean, should I really be talking about my underwear on the internet? Probably not, but I’m going to anyway. I have recently made the switch to Soma’s Cotton Hipster with Lace Trim and the difference is astounding. I’m never going back to multipack underwear!
Products
My general product October things are all over the place, as usual. This category is definitely a window into my life!
Dutch oven
Cooler weather means it’s soup season, and I love to make soup. You can’t make a good soup without a good Dutch oven, and you don’t need to mortgage your house to buy one. I love my Lodge 6-Quart Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven. It is a great quality pot for a tremendous price, at just under $100 when it’s not on sale. I have the oyster color because it looked best in my kitchen, but the colors are all gorgeous!
Body cream
The weather has made a noticeable change, so I have gone ahead and swapped out my skincare products to their thicker, more moisturizing cousins. Although I’m happy I’ve made the switch across the board, I’m seeing the most improvement in the skin on my body, primarily my legs. That’s all down to my secret weapon in the cooler months – Walmart’s Equate Gentle Skin Cream. It’s such a powerhouse beauty product for way less than the name brand alternative. I use it on all the eczema skin in my house (my kids and me!), and it works like a charm!
Wite-Out
I told you my product October things would get weird. Why on Earth am I so into Wite-Out this month? It’s definitely the busiest time of the year in my world. Lots of things are being added to and removed from the calendar, almost on a daily basis. As the keeper of the calendar in my house, I’m in charge of keeping up with all of these changes. That’s where the Wite-Out comes in. I’m so thankful that I can just cover over the previous plans and write the new ones right on top. It keeps my calendar organized and me from going insane (well, it doesn’t push me farther into insanity anyway).
Experiences
As always, some of my best October things weren’t things at all, but experiences!
Apple picking
I don’t think we have missed a Fall apple picking session since my son was born. We go every year to pick whatever varieties are available on the weekend we can fit it into the schedule. Some years we go alone (just our nuclear family), and some years we go with extended family. This year we went with my mother-in-law and one of my brothers-in-law and his family. It’s always fun – we pick apples, we eat apples, and we take some silly pictures. It’s not some huge event, but it’s a tradition that we love. Plus, we get apple pie out of it!
Hair cut
If you read my Fall outfits post earlier this week, you will have seen that I cut my hair. Not only has it gone from pretty darn long to just about shoulder-length, it has also gone from mostly brown to mostly gray. I’m loving the change and seeing my authentic self in this stage of my life come through just a little bit more. I’m continuing to see the benefits of my decision to go gray!
Rainy day
My family has not traditionally had good luck with rainy days, even when we have our rainy day essentials at the ready. When the kids (and the parents) are stuck inside, things tend to take a turn for the worse. But on one rainy Sunday this October, we decided to change up our rainy day routine and it was a great decision. We packed the kids and some of their favorite card games (Eye Found It, Spot It, and Uno) into the car and headed to a little brewery down the road from our house. The grown-ups drank a beer, the kids split a soda, we ate pretzels, played games, and had a really nice time. I encourage you to try something new next time you have a rainy weekend day on your hands. You just might have a great time.
Kid stuff
I have some really good kid stuff in my October things. Just like the products section, we’re all over the place, but it’s all good!
Skechers sneakers
My kids’ feet seem to grow at warp speed. I feel like I am constantly buying them new shoes because they’re growing out of their old ones. And when their feet aren’t growing, my kids are insanely hard on shoes. If I don’t buy them quality shoes, I end up having to replace them pretty instantaneously. I really don’t want to buy shoes more than I have to, so I’ve learned my lesson and buy shoes that hold up to their abuse. This means Skechers. I’ve never had a problem with Skechers falling apart or hurting my kids’ feet. And they’re machine washable, which is an obvious bonus! If you have young kids, I highly recommend Skechers sneakers.
LeapFrog Letters
My son is in kindergarten this year and is doing a great job learning how to read. His sister is only 3, but she’s very jealous of his new skill and wants to talk about, write, and say letters all the time in the hopes that she can start reading too. Her newfound obsession with letters has lead her to another new obsession with the LeapFrog letter writing toy. It says the letters, shows them how to write the letters, and then cues kids to write the letters until they have them mastered. We have an older version of this toy called the Scribble & Write, which appears to no longer be sold. A version of this same toy called the Mr. Pencil Scribble, Write & Read appears to have some minor upgrades if you’re in the market for something to help your kid with letters.
Vampire Teeth
We went to our town’s Halloween event about mid-way through the month. It’s called the Monster Hunt, and they set up little trick-or-treat stations around the park that are each themed to a different monster. Very cute. This year, the vampire station passed out plastic vampire teeth, and my kids could not have been more thrilled. They immediately popped them in their mouths and attempted to suck mom’s blood. Since then. They haven’t really stopped, except when they’re washing them in the sink (I make them wash the vampire teeth regularly, because eww). For a fun Halloween treat next year, stock up on vampire teeth – this multipack is so cute and so cheap!
