Are you looking to simplify the rest of your gifts this Christmas? Consider these signature gift ideas to decide once and knock them out in one fell swoop!
If you still have people on your gift list, they’re probably hard to buy for. Either they want or need nothing or you’re not close enough to them to know exactly what they want or need. For these people, you need a signature gift in your pocket. What is a signature gift, you ask? It’s a gift (or a gift category) that works for absolutely everyone on your list. A signature gift will please everyone from your Aunt Jan to the postal carrier if you pick the right one.
Does the idea of a signature gift sound appealing to you? Then read on for some signature gift ideas that you can make your own!
Signature Gift Ideas
Edible
When I think of something that pretty much everyone would like, I immediately think of food. If that sounds about right to you, consider an edible signature gift.
Homemade
I love to gift homemade food items at the holidays. In fact, food might just be my signature gift. If you want to try your hand at making edible gifts this year, I have some ideas for you. Regardless of what you choose to make, gift the recipe along with the treat. This is a personal touch that really packs a punch!
Sweet
At Christmastime, every has cookies on the mind. And sure, cookies make a great signature gift. Especially for your kids’ teachers. But homemade sweet treats don’t have to begin and end with cookies. They can, though!
Strawberry bread
Strawberry bread has always been my mom’s signature gift. It’s easy and delicious! I’ve shared the recipe before, but here it is again if you’d like to try it.
What you need
- 3 Cups flour
- 2 Cups white sugar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 4 eggs
- 1 ¼ Cups vegetable oil
- 1 bag frozen strawberries, thawed
- Powdered sugar
How to make it
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease loaf pans (makes 3 medium loafs). Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon in a large bowl. Throw the thawed strawberries, eggs, and vegetable oil in the blender. Blend until smooth. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour the blender concoction into the well. Stir until well combined. Bake for approximately 1 hour until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. While the bread is still warm, dust the top with some powdered sugar.
Cookies
Of course, you can (and should!) gift a tin of Christmas cookies as your signature gift. I like to go grab a holiday tin from the dollar store, line it with wax paper, and fill it with multiple varieties of yummy treats. Some of my family’s favorites include chocolate crinkles, brown butter sugar cookies, and mint chocolate cookies. For a full run-down of my favorite holiday treats, check out my holiday baking list.
Savory
You don’t have to limit your edible signature gift to sweet items. In fact, people need a little savory in their lives around the holidays!
Seasoned pretzels
I have pretzel-obsessed kids. They love twists, sticks, rods – you name it. If you’re gifting to folks who have young children, they’re probably also pretzel-obsessed. Give the whole family a treat by choosing seasoned pretzels as your signature gift!
Chex mix
Who doesn’t like Chex mix? A homemade Chex mix is an especially good choice if you’re gifting to people who avoid gluten. Lean into the corn and rice Chex varieties and make sure the other mix-ins are gluten-free to gift them a thoughtful treat.
Store-bought
Food gifts that you don’t make also make great signature gift ideas! If you go this route, steer clear of regular grocery store items and pick something a bit more gourmet. Some options for gourmet food gifts include local honey, elevated vanilla extract, locally made jerky, fancy olive oil or balsamic vinegar (or both!), coffee, and spice mixes. Although these food gifts are all great, my favorite food gift is a box of fresh Florida citrus. Unfortunately, citrus diseases and overpopulation have significantly reduced the options available for straight from the grove citrus, but there are still a few groves that ship citrus gift boxes.
Useful
If you’re like me, you like to get and give useful gifts to folks at any gift-giving opportunity. Useful gifts don’t have to be boring. They can definitely qualify as a signature gift if you pick the right useful items.
Soap
Everyone needs soap. But very few people buy themselves really nice soap. That’s why fancy soap along with a nice hand towel makes a great signature gift!
Stationery
Everyone also needs paper and pens, even in our digital world. A simple pad of paper is great, of course, but you might also want to consider some specialized notepads like meal planning pads or daily to-do list pads. Don’t forget to add a pack of pens – the Zebra Sarasa Clip 0.5 is my absolute favorite.
Swedish dish cloths
I really don’t like using paper towels these days. It just seems so wasteful! To help keep my family’s paper towel consumption to a minimum, I’ve been trying all kinds of replacements. One of my favorite replacement products has been Swedish dish cloths. They are great for wiping counters!
Reusable grocery bags
Another item that everyone needs, but no one likes to spend money on is a reusable grocery bag. That makes these the perfect signature gift! Spring for the insulated version if you can swing it.
Rechargeable hand warmers
If you live in a place that gets cold during the winter, your family and friends could probably use some hand warmers. I gifted my mother-in-law a pair of rechargeable hand warmers last year for Christmas to keep her hands warm at the ice rink while she watches her grandsons play hockey. After recently using them at an outdoor football game in frigid weather, I can attest that they work super well. These rechargeable hand warmers would make a very thoughtful signature gift.
Fire blanket
Can you get a more useful signature gift than a fire blanket? I don’t think so. I’ve been so intrigued by these fire blankets since I first saw them and now I think everyone needs one stashed under their kitchen sink. Give the gift of fire safety this year and your giftees will be so appreciative.
Hydration
Give the gift of hydration this Christmas with a water bottle filled with electrolyte packets as your signature gift. I really love this idea. Pretty much everyone you know is chronically dehydrated, so help them out this holiday season with an Owala FreeSip stuffed with Liquid I.V.
Oven mitts
You probably need new oven mitts. I probably need new oven mitts. Oven mitts are an item that you buy once or receive as a gift and then never bother to replace, no matter how burned or dirty they get. Help nudge your friends and family to get rid of their grody old oven mitts by making a nice pair of oven mitts your signature gift this year.
Fun
Food and useful items make great gifts, but don’t be afraid to have a little fun with your signature gift. We all need more fun in our lives!
Playing cards/game
We think to gift card or board games to kids, but grown-ups like to play games too! Put a smile on your gift recipients’ faces by gifting them a super fun way to pass the time. These cocktail playing cards are super fun! You could round out the gift with the ingredients to make one of the included cocktails.
Seasonal plant
I really love the idea of gifting a seasonal plant as a signature gift. A plant is a good gift idea year round, but leaning into the holiday season with an amaryllis bulb or a Christmas cactus hits exactly the right note.
Cookbook
I toggled between including a cookbook as a useful gift or a fun gift, but I have a ton of fun leafing through cookbooks and then cooking my way through them, so I landed on including it in the fun signature gift category. This year, my top pick for a cookbook gift is Sally’s Baking 101. It’s full of beautiful recipes and beautiful pictures. Sally McKenney also runs the blog Sally’s Baking Addiction, and if you have read any Sara in Season posts before, you know I basically adore her.
Ornament
I love adding ornaments to my Christmas tree every year. They’re fun to pick out for yourself, of course, but they’re also fun to pick out for others. You can pick a personalized ornament for each person on your gift list or you can buy a generic ornament that works for everyone. If you go the generic route, pick something that’s meaningful to you so that your giftees can remember you each year when they decorate their trees.
Gift card
It is not rude or impersonal to make your signature gift this year a gift card. It’s 2025 for goodness’ sake! Here again, you can personalize the gift card to each recipient or you can pick one type of gift card (either to a particular store or just a generic VISA gift card) and have it work for everyone on your list.
